Indian medical graduates will now be able to practice medicine in foreign countries, as the National Medical Commission (NMC) received the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) recognition status for a duration of 10 years.
The Union Health Ministry issued a press release to notify the news.
With WFME accreditation as a requirement, this will make it possible for medical graduates with degrees from Indian colleges to pursue post-graduation or practice medicine in nations including the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
The WFME’s accreditation of the NMC will allow the commission to raise the caliber and standards of medical education in India by bringing it in line with worldwide best practices and benchmarks, in addition to its attractiveness on a global scale.
Additionally, it will promote academic collaborations and exchanges, support ongoing advancements and innovation in medical education, and enhance the international recognition and reputation of Indian medical institutions and practitioners.
The press release also highlights the crucial function played by the Education Commission on Foreign Medical Education (ECFMG), which is in charge of regulating the licensing of foreign medical graduates (IMGs) in the US.
The United States Medical Licensing Examinations (USMLEs) and applications for residency programs both require ECFMG certification for IMGs.
