Emerging Fashion Trends and Their Impact on the Society

In today’s fashion-driven world, we have also become a part of fashion. Fashion today is a way of life for us. Like other basic human needs (food, water, and shelter), clothing is one of the most important elements of life. People worry about their clothes.  Today we pay a lot of attention to choosing the right clothes and outfits for every occasion. Be it party wear, casual wear, festive wear, wedding wear, etc.  Today’s generation has no hesitation in choosing and spending time and money on it.

The magical world of fashion has conquered the human mind and we are forced to follow the changing trends.  If people follow fashion trends, they are noticed by their friends, colleagues, relatives, and even strangers. So fashion trends do play a major role in human life.

What is Fashion Trend?

A fashion trend is a fashion style or creatively designed clothing, jewellery, footwear, handbag, etc. that is popular at a particular time. The demand of people to buy such trendy items increases and is followed by everyone (especially the young generation). However, since fashion affects the mass level and society as a whole, it can have a great impact on society. The influence can be positive or negative.

Fashion is always a reflection of society and current events. Popular cultural figures such as celebrities, singers, social media influencers, and high-profile personalities also influence fashion trends. Fashion trends nowadays frequently follow a cyclical pattern, drawing ideas from previous eras and rearranging them to suit current tastes. Ten years ago, it was thought that some clothing trends were out of style, but today they are once again popular.

Celebrities are one of the most potent factors in trend development. The public adore celebrities and follows their every move, hanging on every word they say. Celebrities are compelling fashion icons, so large corporations hire them as spokesmen for their businesses and goods.

Over the last several years, influencers and social media stars have overtaken magazine editors in the fashion industry’s popularity rankings. These influencers have become trendsetters by providing content that encourages their followers to purchase the things they advocate.

Impact of Fashion Trends on Society

As fashion has become an integral part of human society, it plays some role in society. The fashion world takes something from society and gives something back to society. Fashion influences society. For example, a farmer wearing skin-tight jeans means that the fashion has influenced the people living even in the village. On the other hand, if a local community’s ethnic clothing influences celebrity and other haute fashion designers, it means that the community has influenced fashion; So, it has a reverse effect too. The younger generation is the most likely to keep track of new fashion trends. They are the first to spot new trends and become aware of them.

Fashion trends are like two sides of a coin. They impact society both positively and negatively.

Positive Impact of Fashion Trends on Society

  • The changing fashion trends create an environment of healthy competition that inspires the next generation of fashion designers and other related professionals to put in a lot of effort and produce innovative and relevant new ideas.
  • It creates new employment opportunities for many a student (of fashion studies)
  • New and trendy formal fashion designed clothes enhance the look of the wearer and give the  confidence to work efficiently, especially in an office.
  • Wearing new trendy clothes gives one a boost in self confidence. And that person is noticed by others.
  • Moreover, by integrating different cultures and traditions, it is possible to keep the tradition and become fashionable with the trend.

Negative Impact of Fashion Trends on Society

  • Because of excessive orientation toward the fashion trends, traditional design and associated culture may be lost.
  • The young generation is increasingly influenced by fashion culture.
  • Such new fashion trends also affect the psychology of younger generations, and hence, if they do not get it, then it badly affects their minds and confidence and (likely) they become victims of psychological disorders such as eating disorders, mental illness, stress, etc.
  • Self-confidence may get lost if one cannot change with the new trend. This may cause them to develop a sense of inferiority.

The fashion world has given a huge boost to the community as they choose their clothes and outfits according to these changing trends. Hence, a huge career potential is open in the world of fashion today.
