ASAP Initiatives in the Field of Medicine

The profound importance of quality healthcare and its immediate need was pinpointed to the forefront when the pandemic hit. The whole world stood at a standstill, as mere organisms anticipating for a protector to work his ways and put an end to this suffering. But, what actually protected our home is the amount of effort and hardwork a group of people has put into balancing the world, in the weakest of times. A group of people who prioritized us more than themselves and their families, who came together considering the world their family- the healthcare workers.

A healthcare worker is one who delivers care and services to the ailing either directly as doctors and nurses or indirectly as helpers, lab technicians or even medical waste handlers. A health facility works as a chain process where everyone above mentioned has their own duties to perform. If any one of them stops, the whole process gets affected. The increasing relevance of the healthcare sector has paved the way to the introduction of many educational courses and training programs in this field. ASAP, an initiative by the Kerala govt. provides a number of courses in this area. Let’s take a look at these courses.

ASAP rolled out a course named “Finishing Courses for Nurses” in 2021 intending to enhance the employability skills of nurses in Kerala to meet the rising global demands. This crash course was initiated by the Govt. of Kerala for 10,000 qualified nurses for overseas employment through ASAP Kerala, against the framework of the 2020-21 budget. The programme had three components:

  • Language training
  • Clinical training
  • Overseas placement

ASAP had partnered with the British Council for language training and Aster DM Healthcare for clinical training. Candidates who had attained a specific language proficiency as per the NHS, were offered placement through ODEPC, a govt. of Kerala initiative. Similarly, ASAP is rolling out another course for both beginners and experienced BSc and GNM nurses. This will be an IELTS (International English Language Testing System)and OET (Occupational English Test) training programme that will help them with overseas placements. The updates regarding this course will be out soon in the ASAP official website.
