Integrating Arts in Education

Integrating Arts in Education

Ms. Hina Desai, Principal, Birla Open Minds International School:

Art Integrated Learning is a pedagogy of joyful and experimental learning.

This is the learning pillar which help students to develop their cognitive domain which involves knowledge and development of intellectual skills, to recognize specific facts and concepts. Second, is psychomotor domain which include physical movement, coordination, use of the motor skills and third is that affective domain which include feelings, emotions and attitudes.

That is why we can say Art Integrated Learning helps in holistic development of child.

Art is a co-scholastic subject as well as the teaching-learning medium to understand concepts within any subject of the curriculum.

Art is divided into two sections: One is Visual Art which includes drawing, painting, craft, mask, puppet making, sculpture, clay modelling and second is performing art which includes dancing, singing, theater and puppetry.

Art plays a vital role in education because it helps to develop attention to details. Children focus on each and every step while drawing something on the paper. It enhances observation skills of the child.

For example, teacher can arrange art game in the classroom. In this game, children will observe objects in the classroom. Out of the all the objects, they have to select only one object, observing the details and draw on the paper. After that, they have to study the material, size and shape, height and colour of the object. This will be a fun activity for the child and simultaneously learning process will happen.

Art like dancing, singing, also improves focus and concentration of the child.

It also helps children to engage in creative and constructive work. The learner explores creativity while building connection between different concepts.

Art also strengthens critical thinking as well as problem solving skills. Children learn lot about decision making while performing on stage.

While learning other subject through art, children are sitting together. They are getting an opportunity to cooperate and share the materials. They start to understand the sense of responsibility and share hands with other classmate to achieve common goal.

Teaching through Art can present difficult concepts visually, making them easier to understand.

It helps to allow free emotional expression and the freedom of imagination brings innovation.

Art Integrated Learning helps to strengthen the child’s curiosity and imagination.

It helps the facilitator to move away from the traditional method of assessment and recall method towards a continuous and comprehensive assessment which can help to assess both the learning development as well as socio-emotional development of the child.

That is why Art Integrated Learning is a strong experimental learning because it helps children with the development of motor skills, languages, social skills, decision making and risk taking factors.

Hence Art Integration in Education can revive the golden learning era and improve children’s lives for the better.
