During the 2022–2023 academic year, the number of foreign students attending American colleges and universities increased at the quickest rate in more than 40 years, mostly due to an inflow from India. For the first time since 2009–10, India has also overtaken China to take the lead in the number of foreign graduate students hosted in the US.
According to the non-profit Institute of International Education and the State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the number of international students enrolled at U.S. universities increased to 1,057,188 in the past academic year, a 12% increase.
According to the survey, 80% of US colleges prioritise graduate outreach for students in India, while 70% of US colleges prioritise undergraduate outreach.
Over a million foreign students were admitted to the US in 2022–2023, a 12% increase from the previous academic year. This growth rate is the fastest it has been in over 40 years. The report also stated that in 2022–2023, the number of international students enrolled at all academic levels increased for the first time since 2014–2015.
“Students from all over the world have chosen the United States as the top destination for international study,” stated Assistant US Secretary of State Lee Satterfield. International education is a means of fostering harmony and intercultural understanding while equipping people with the skills needed to confront the common problems of our day.
More than a million foreign students are enrolled in US universities, showing a significant uptick and a return to pre-pandemic levels. This confirms that, as it has for more than a century, the United States continues to be the top choice for international students looking to study abroad, according to IIE Chief Executive Officer Allan E. Goodman.
