US Increases Student Visa Cost

The cost of student visas in the US has changed for all foreign students. The cost of a student visa will now rise by $25 starting on May 30, 2023, according to a statement from the US Department of State. The US government released this notice on state.gov , which serves as its official website.

The official announcement states that the student visa fee will rise from the current US $160 to US $185. The date on which this takes effect is May 30, 2023. According to the notice, “The Department of State published a Final Rule regarding increases to certain nonimmigrant visa application processing fees (NIV) and the Border Crossing Card (BCC) for Mexican citizens aged 15 and over.” The cost of visiting visas (B1/B2 and BCC), as well as other non-petition based NIVs including student and exchange visitor visas, will rise from $160 to $185. 

In other words, if they are accepted into any US-based university, Indian students will have to spend more than Rs 14,000 in student visa fees, depending on the current exchange rate. The number of Indian students has more than doubled, with the country’s percentage of all international students rising from 11.8 to 21.8%, according to the Open Doors Report 2022. The number of Indian students enrolled in US colleges had decreased by 4.4% and 13.2% during the course of two years, from 2018-19 to 2019-20 and from 2019-20 to 2020-21, respectively.
