Through the company’s new Thoroughbred Scholars programme, 100 children of Norfolk Southern Corporation (NYSE: NSC) employees will earn college scholarships worth up to $10,000 over four years. Three students will also earn additional special rewards totaling up to $40,000 over a four-year period. The Thoroughbred Scholars programme attracted more than 500 applications when it was first introduced this summer.
According to Alan Shaw, president and chief executive officer of Norfolk Southern, “We developed the Thoroughbred Scholars programme as another way to help our workers and their families.” “With a curriculum that promotes high education and skill development, we are putting our ideals into practise. We’re pleased of these exceptional individuals and excited to see what they accomplish in their academic endeavours.”
Ninety of the 100 scholarships were set aside for the offspring of Norfolk Southern’s front-line field workers, including the engineers, mechanics, conductors, and others who work tirelessly to keep the American economy running. The receivers are spread over the company’s network in 16 different states. The Thoroughbred Scholars are full-time undergraduate students pursuing undergraduate degrees at reputable two- or four-year institutions. They are awarded $2,500 year, renewable for up to four years. Scholarship America separately oversees the Thoroughbred Scholars programme. The company is the largest manager of scholarships and educational assistance programmes for businesses, organisations, groups, and people in the country
