Commerce and Course Choices

The very word ‘Commerce’ means trade and business activities. Commerce stream is for those students who possess a genuine interest in Business, Entrepreneurship, Finance, Money, Stocks and have an affinity for numbers. Having studied commerce stream in Class 11 and 12 allows students to choose from a multitude of courses and career.

This article looks at the scope of the commerce stream in India, tries to list out the further educational disciplines on offer and the subsequent careers one can make out of it.

Bachelor of Commerce (BCom)

This is probably the most popular course amongst Commerce aspirants. This course is majorly offered as BCom Honours and BCom General. The duration of the course spans over a period of three years. Depending on your aptitude and interest, there are a number of specializations available in BCom. Some of the specializations are; Accounting, Taxation, Statistics, Management, Finance, Applied Economics, Banking, Business Administration, Marketing, Tourism and Travel.

Eligibility Criteria: Admission is based on marks obtained in Class 12th, Some colleges may have an entrance exam for admissions.

Bachelor of Business Administration and Bachelor of Legislative Law Honours (BBA LLB)

BBA LLB is an undergraduate Administrative Law professional integrated course. Students opting for BBA LLB get to study the combination of Business Administration and Law.

Eligibility Criteria: Minimum 50% marks in Class 12th

Bachelor of Business Administration/Bachelor of Management Studies (BBA/BMS)

BBA/BMS is a precursor to Master in Business Management (MBA). BBA/BMS is the Bachelor’s degree undertaken to pursue a career in Business Management.

Bachelor in Computer Application (BCA)

BCA is an undergraduate course generally undertaken by students who wish to explore the world of Computer languages. A BCA degree is at par with a BTech/BE degree in Computer Science or Information Technology. A candidate who has cleared Class 12th commerce stream with Maths and English can pursue BCA.

Eligibility Criteria: Minimum 45-55% marks in Class 12th

Chartered Accountancy (CA)

Chartered Accountancy or CA is a course commerce students can pursue to become Chartered Accountants. To pursue CA in India, the candidate needs to register with The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI). This course has three stages:

Company Secretary (CS)

Company Secretary or CS is a course commerce students can pursue after Class12th to become Company Secretary. To pursue the course and earn the CS degree the candidate has to register with the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI).

Eligibility Criteria: Minimum 50% marks in Class 12th

Bachelor of Accounting and Finance (BAF)

BAF is a programme that focuses on subjects like tax, auditing, cost accounting, business law, and economics. The course offers great scope in the finance and accounting fields.

Eligibility Criteria: Must studied Accounts and Finance, Minimum 50% marks in Class 12th

Bachelor of Financial Markets (BFM)

The course focuses on subjects like debt markets, risk management, equity markets, microeconomics, mutual funds, investment and security markets.

Eligibility Criteria: Candidates who have studied Mathematics and economics are given a higher preference.

Bachelor in Banking and Insurance (BBI)

Banking and finance aspirants can pursue this course. An MBA in Finance after this course can improve employability chances.

Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India (ICWAI)

The institute is a professional account body that checks your proficiency through various examinations in the field of cost accountancy. The certificates provided by the institute opens up great opportunities in the accounting management domain.

Eligibility Criteria: Minimum 50% marks in Class 12th

In the above list, we explored a few job-oriented courses after class 12th commerce. Commerce students can also prepare and appear in competitive exams for Banking, Defence and Civil Services after completing Class 12th to make a career in these sectors. Commerce student can also opt for BA in various disciplines, Bsc in Hotel Management, Journalism etc.
